Devolute
04:55
|
|||
Devolute now
Guess I wanted to
Be the one who fell
Fathoms and leagues into the swell
The tiny man
Kicked and cartwheeled
Some murmuring man spoke well of you
Well what of you
Devolute now
Destitute with
Nothin’ but our clothes
Walkin’ up the coast
A skippin’ stone’s throw won’t break the spell
Oh little flower
Why now won’t you grow
One isn’t much fun, but two might do
Should I choose you
Devolute now
Why are you so wonderful
How are you so beautiful
Beautiful to see, wonderful to me
Love can be so powerful
It even turns terrible
Oh the irony, such hypocrisy
Dead to rights, I
Heard with second sight
Under the deep blue
Chasms and cracks broke up the shell
You gotta change
Shift the shape so
No prison will hold, all truth be told
But is that you
Or are you through
Devolute now
Devolute now
Devolute now

Near Wagontire Mountain
03:10
|
|||
Back down to what you had, no frills and dollar bills
Better go easy on the road, no tellin’ what’s around the bend
River’s runnin’ low, warm days and nights so cold
Put the best thing in your mind and go out and find it
Right now or in the end, uh-oh, you’re gonna die
Maybe lay low beneath the sky out near Wagontire Mountain
Years before you know your pain made the body go
Oh the less you feel inside when your world is right
The more it only hurts to show
Workin’ for a livin’s fine
Don’t worry ‘bout the way I choose to spend my time
We’ll all keep rollin’ to the end of the line
Out there, in the dark somewhere
Far
Star
Near
Here
Night
Light
Love makes the fire bright
I’ll leave the sea behind and reach the desert tonight
Get out and get ahead, look back and redefine
See the big beach for little sands, Nevada, California
Black Rock goldmine, warm days and nights so cold
Put the best thing in your mind and go out and find it
Watch and wave goodbye to a wasted life
Cheers to your sunshine and a better way, brighter days, another phase...

Rev It Up and Ride
06:22
|
|||
Found a good love one day
Followed her down to L.A.
She’s there, I couldn’t stay
Had to cut out and go on my way
She felt so good, I wondered if I should
But when she cried I knew I would
Pues dale mis saludos
I didn’t get too far
Banditos stole my car
Walked on and found a bar
Mezcal straight right from the jar
A bad drunken dream makes it all kinda seem a little funny
The end is right behind
And creepin’ closer all the time
Like souls to hell to suffer
We’re done, yeah we’re done, better have us another
On me, it’s on me, so give one for my brother, on me
This one’s free for the taking, it’s free, this one’s free
Oh it’s yours if you want it, it’s yours, this is ours
‘Til it’s time to rev it up and ride on
Love me like you do
Keep my heart and be true
All your pretty tears
Precious diamonds on you
On and on and gone too soon
Trip to worlds unknown
Throw your neck ‘round a stone
And see what’s at the bottom
No peace in the valley, just war and destruction
A tragic mirage, a bad hallucination you see
Catastrophic delusions of calm, there’s no calm
Only strife and affliction, so gather your horses
All signs say rev it up and ride on

Unlucky Number
05:11
|
|||
In my mind I can see into the shroud
Where a figure flits from limb to limb
In an old oak tree by the cemetery
In my mind’s eye flying ghost is just a cloud
Mournful voices prob’ly not so near
As I think they are
In this dream there is no waking no shaking free
From the chains around my hands and feet
Oh sweet by and by won’t you set me free
And here we are come to the last crossroads
No way out and no way to know
But what if I don’t wanna go
In the stream and the rocks reflecting
Cold deep long eternities of sleep we seek
In the night just before dawn to a dove’s song

Someplace Else Maybe
03:25
|
|||
Same old crowd
Same old town
An outsider in a world fallin’ down
Some old cowboy spit right in the dirt, left no mark
Allow me?
Plow free
Plow under all the dead winter leaves
Rebel kid don’t know what he wants, don’t know nothin’
Go roam the land, hell yeah, man, look at my plan
Turn it up, turn it up
Turn it up loud
Be proud
Movin’ east up towards the Bighorn Range
Any job’s okay, just needed a change
Must be more to this life than money and toys
White noise
Alright boys
Restless mind, whatever truth you can find
However tragic the line you almost crossed this time
Nameless kind, no new horizon so you fly into the great unknown
And lose all self-control
Reckless soul, give it up and go
Nobody really knows where the energy goes
All you can say is it don’t go away
Be better tomorrow, forget yesterday
Fallin’ all the way down
Stumblin’ around
Fallin’ all the way down
Stumblin’ around
Someplace else maybe
That or go crazy
That or wither up and die

Morning noon and nightshade growing all around your grave
Cars go by in a sad parade
Seasons come and go away
Twilight sleep and softly dream of how it still could be
Far away in the sweet country
Close your eyes and you’ll see
Our farm just as it was once upon a time
Come no harm to your remembrance of what’s come to pass
It’s gone so fast
It will not last
Deepest lake and white swan, clear blue sky, time’s oldest song
Until the end we can do no wrong
Find your place and belong
There, there under the willow with your broken heart
Anywhere’s bound to be dangerous, I only know
I loved you so
And let you go
So now I hide
And stay inside
Without the light
Good looks, evil intentions oh beware my love
Feathered hooks with colors and pretty to see
Pearl-handled nickel-plated pistol on the chair
One in the chamber and no one there
Leave it alone or take care

Vacation Blues
03:57
|
|||
I jumped in line for a ride and the jump took forever
Lost my place in the book I was readin’
Just forgot what I was gonna say
Must be on my mind
Maybe we could spend some time
Me and you, by the pool, sippin’ drinks, that’d be cool
I walked outside in the sun and the beautiful weather
Missed your face, if I’d have known you were leavin’
I’d have thought of somethin’ good to say
I was on a roll
But you know how luck can go
I sorta wound up all alone
Crashin’ the parties and the fun
Back down to one
But I’m just fine for a fool tryin’ to keep it together
Such a waste, though I can’t think of a reason
Why I’d let it go and spoil my day
Bust a happy rhyme
Share a laugh with friends of mine
Send some good will down the line
On the beach where all the golden honeys lay
Outta reach, I’m homesick on a holiday
High and low, no one I know make me feel blue quite like she do
And so I’m on the beach where all the foxy bunnies play
Hide-and-seek, yeah this is where I’m gonna stay
High and low, no one I know make me feel blue quite like she do
That’s why I’m on the beach where all the golden honeys lay
Outta reach...

Cemetery Solitaire
04:22
|
|||
Came upon a city in the dusk
Lit a fire and drew pictures in the dust
Read the names of the fallen and the few
Who served their loved ones better than I do
The night is so big and the day just a flicker in the ashes left behind
Walked along in the ruins and the rust
Made a prayer for the wicked and the just
Faces frozen in agony and lust
Screams on lips long numb to the touch
I kicked out the coals, couldn’t cry, cuz you’re done when you feel too much
Lingered there in the stillness and the gloom
Sounds of war like an echo in a tomb
Hard to know that we’re anything but doomed
Wolves and lambs lie snug in the womb
I guess we’ll get by, by the skin of our teeth and the gleam in our eye
Throw on another blanket, it’s colder
Aces high, joker’s wild, my heart’s bleedin’ for ya
I’ll get you there, just lean on my shoulder
Baby all you have’s me and all I have is you
I’ll say I told you so when we’re older
Hang on tight, time to fight, you push on, I’ll pull through

I heard the footsteps fade
The music water maid as she began to wade
Across the starlit mire below the cave
Balancing Rock illumed in the dark
Moonshine’s mine up to the Primitive
Over the fields and down to Ma’s garden
Rustling of the old trees stirs my memory
Oh I still believe all those mysteries
Fooled ‘em all but me
I ain’t that naïve
Here never the foot of a man should tread
But to dig a deep hole and put himself to bed
Let the earth weaken the pull of his threads
And the worms wind through the holes in his head
Skeleton wheel of the mill hasn’t turned in an age
And the factory’s burned
Sweep out the cobwebs and grime
We’ll have one hell of a time
They say she’s haunted
Trespass late at night
Paradise ain’t this nice
I won’t leave...on my own
Feels like, feels like home

Fencepost
07:21
|
|||
Ramblin’ the same dark woods again
Followed a stray thought and wandered in
Felt like an alien in my own skin
Patterns and textures right down to the end
Just like I know, just like I been told
Autumn leaves of gold, trouble I’m in
Recipe for some slow demise
Not like I planned but hardly surprised
Pieces of dreams that float out on the tide
Letters to you that drew no warm reply
Just like I thought, just like I been taught
Seventh waves that roll, my misfortune
Baby says no, papa don’t go
Baby says no, papa don’t go
Baby says no, no, no, no, papa don’t go
I’ll make it right and mend your wing
An eagle flies, it doesn’t sing
I always knew you had me, I was just playin’ dumb
The downtown bars are all shut down
The hour’s late, no one’s around
You always could impress me with your blouse undone
So here I go again I guess
You’ve seen the worst, so here’s my best:
We always were a pair, and you were always the one
Take a walk down Evans Quarry Road
Call ol’ Bird Dog and see if he’ll show
Grab our fishin’ poles and take life slow
By the spillway on a Sunday in the summertime
Steady hummin’ of the bugs drones on
Shade tree shadow puppet playin’ on the pond
Close my eyes and let go a lazy yawn
In the tall grass, feel the clouds pass ‘til I’m gone
Float on down past the bridge at Cookie’s Creek
Don’t them fieldhands sure look beat
Wren on a fencepost singin’ so sweet
Not a worry, no hurry, leave our troubles behind
You might not understand
But to my eyes it looks like the promised land
Like a flash at the bottom of a pan
Look at ol’ Dog, no shirt, no shoes
Wadin’ in the water like a redneck fool
Big Jim told me son you got to get loose
You just never ever know
Got no fortune, nothin’ in the will
Debt so deep, this bowl is bound to spill
All them greedy fingers in the till
While the fat cat naps, it’s tit for tat
Seems the luxury of life is in your lap
Reverie weakens, I’ll rue the day
Treasure in hand but it slipped away
Never a care for one damn thing we did
Not how it was when I was still a kid
Just like we knew, just like we been through
Such a ways to go, but look where we’ve been...

I’m only asking twice cuz you never heard the first time
‘Do Not Disturb’ was hanging on your door
No, I just can’t steal you
Drive away to some unknown destination
And feel that sweet elation
We knew when we fell through
Upside-down all turned around
And landed in love
Everything reminds you of the beautiful place
You can’t find your way back to
Whoever said it would be easy in life
Never had him a wife like the good woman I found
Whoever said it wasn’t worth it
Never had to earn it with his girl
Open up your window
Feel the sun on your face
Breathe the word in your mind
And maybe then by the grace of God
It just might be time
To let all your worries go
Everything reminds you of the beautiful place
You can’t find your way back to
Watch where you walk, don’t go lookin’ for trouble
Keep from the brambles and side-roads
Watch how you talk to me baby, be subtle
So much is already obvious
I’ll just say, if I may
One more thing, before I go away
I tried so hard and came so far
Now I’m so tired...
You had your chance, all the time in the world
To show me that you weren’t the same old fool-hearted boy
Now you lost your best girl
We live and we learn and we long to be loved by someone in return
Hope you find your someone

Just the Wind
02:17
|

Just the wind
Blowin’ again
Thought I mighta’ heard you whisperin’
Sweet dreams, my dear, your true love is here
And only sighing
Swore I heard a music soft and slow
Just like a lullaby from somewhere in the night
But it’s just the wind
Playin’ tricks again
My mind’s wanderin’
Prob’ly just the wind
Cold and rain
Numbin’ the pain
Hopin’ January things will change
Maybe next year we’ll be far from here
I’ll just keep tryin’
Listenin’ for music sweet and low
Just like an angel’s cry so warm and filled with light
It’s alright
Sleep tonight
Come tomorrow
No more sorrow...

lyrics from the poem “How Many Little Children Sleep” ©️ James Agee
(used by permission of The Wylie Agency LLC & The James Agee Trust)
“How many little children sleep
To wake, like you, only to weep:
How many others play who will
Like you, and all men, weep and kill.
And many parents watch and say,
Where they weep, where they play,
‘By all we love, by all we know,
It never shall befall them so.’
But in each one the terror grows
By all he loves, by all he knows,
‘Soon they must weep; soon they shall kill.
No one wills it, but all will.’”
